There are so many who write, but don’t do. Not Steven Kotler—he is the antithesis of an “armchair expert,” a man who always lives what he writes, and in the case of Gnar Country, writes what he lives. In this refreshingly raw narrative, Kotler personally proves that aging is actually a gateway to exploring new levels of our performance potential—and shows us how to do it. Gnar Country gets you excited to grow older!

A PERSONAL NOTE
FROM STEVEN
The cool thing about Gnar Country? The reason you should read it? We tell ourselves to slow down in our later years, but we don’t have to. If you know what you’re doing, the second half of our lives is the perfect time to chase down our big dreams.

Welcome to GNAR COUNTRY— a playbook for peak performance aging.
Over the past decade, breakthroughs in a dozen different fields offer a radically new view of our later years. This research shows we can sustain peak performance much longer than anyone thought possible. Would this research work in the real world? I decided to find out.

In GNAR COUNTRY, I put these principles to the test on my own body. How? By teaching myself to park ski at age 53—which, for half-a-dozen different biological factors, is considered nearly impossible for anyone over the age of 35.

Here’s what I learned:
-
Aging is a mental event as much as a physical process, and a shift in mindset can add seven years to our lives.

-
Strength, stamina and all the other abilities we once believed declined over time, are now seen as use-it-or-lose-it skills. By training our bodies and brains for our later years, we can retain and improve our prowess far longer than suspected.

-
Beneficial brain changes occur in the second half of our lives, which—if properly cultivated—unlock whole new levels of intelligence, wisdom, creativity, and empathy.

-
Old dogs can indeed learn new tricks or, in other words, old humans are better at learning certain skills than their younger counterparts.

-
Far from being a time of loneliness, depression and cognitive decline, our later years have the potential to be wildly meaningful and fulfilling.
Part adventure story, part science experiment, part how-to guide, GNAR COUNTRY is an inspiring, actionable, and often hilarious invitation to transform living longer into living better.
